dispatcher training videos and information
lANGUAGE LINE
Language Line has assigned and designated two (2) 800 numbers to the State of Indiana. One for Spanish and one for any other language.
In Indiana, 95% of all language line requests require a Spanish interpreter. When using the Spanish speed dial button and the language is not Spanish, the Language Line Agent will transfer or conference in other interpreters to assist.
Indiana has been assigned numbers that will automatically populate the Language Line Agent’s screen with IN 911 Statewide account information. Your agency should not be required to give the Client ID anymore.
You will need to update or contact your 911 CPE support group to make the speed dial and/or button updates on your call taker screen. Please contact Laurel Simmermeyer to obtain the Client ID and the toll free numbers to program into your CPE.
Once you have updated your 911 equipment with the new Language Line, a courtesy email to Laurel Simmermeyer at [email protected] would be greatly appreciated. Language Line is an invaluable tool for many agencies, and it is our desire to make it easier and free to use by our Indiana PSAPS.
If you or your CPE vendor has any difficulties updating or testing the numbers please contact INdigital at 877-469-2010 or [email protected]. Laurel Simmermeyer is also available to assist in any service issues.

Best practices when using language line
There are a few best practices that 911 Operators can utilize to improve language translation services.
- After the translator has connected to the call and the 911 Operator has asked their question, it is beneficial for all parties for the 911 Operator to mute their mic. 911 Centers can generate a lot of background noise from other employees, radio traffic, etc. Muting your mic reduces the amount of unneeded noise on the call, allowing the calling party and translator to communicate as efficiently as possible.
- Utilize RapidSOS with either your PSAP account or through Texty to help identify a more accurate location on the calling party. The translator will still verify the location, but this will help if the calling party needs to know precisely where they are located. If you are still looking for the calling party with all available information, another method would be to utilize What3Words in Texty.
- Turn down your audio. If the 911 Operator has their audio turned up too loud, it can cause distortions that interfere with the 3-way call.
Back up for language line
On average, there are 15,700 911 calls that require language translation each year in the State of Indiana. Of those calls, Spanish consists of nearly 90% of all translated languages, with a little more than 14,000 calls translated. It will benefit all dispatch centers to have backup plans for language translation if the voice translation services fail.
One alternate method is for 911 Operators to utilize translation services in Texty. The latest version of Texty can translate 108 different languages. Another way would be to provide specific foreign language training for your employees and some cards to assist them. To simplify responses, you would want to generalize these questions and give "yes" or "no" answers. But with only a few questions, you would be able to verify the location and type of service requested.
